The trade-off is straightforward SaaS economics. Asana's Starter plan runs $10.99 per user per month billed annually (about $13.49 month-to-month), and the Advanced tier that unlocks portfolios, goals, and deeper reporting jumps to $24.99 per user per month — with a two-seat minimum on both paid plans. For a 20-person team on Advanced, that's roughly $6,000 a year, recurring, with no path to bring the cost down other than reducing headcount or downgrading features.

Asana is also entirely closed source and cloud-only: there's no self-hosted edition, no on-prem deployment, and no way to keep task data off Asana's infrastructure if your industry or contract requires it. Teams that are happy paying for a mature, well-integrated SaaS product will find Asana hard to beat on polish. Teams that want the same board-and-timeline workflow without recurring per-seat costs or a third party holding their project data increasingly look at self-hosted alternatives like Plane, OpenProject, or Huly, all of which run for the cost of a VPS.
